The Scottish Unity League (SUL) was set up to aim to create an environment free from prejudice and discrimination and bring players together from different backgrounds. All teams entering the League have signed a declaration against sectarianism, racism and bigotry and have made a written commitment to having a team open to all. The only selection criteria being the footballing ability, character of the individual and the collective balance of the team. The league has welcomed players of many nationalities for example: Indian, Scottish, Pakistani, Chinese, Italian and also many religions such as Protestant, Catholic, Hindu, Sikh and Muslim. The league has also welcomes a growing number of players from Scotland's growing new communities from former Russian states,Africa,Albania and many other countries. To date the league has not had to enforce its ruling that 'Any player sent off for sectarian, racist or bigoted actions of any kind will face an immediate 3-month ban'. The duration of the ban may be increased subject to the decision of the Director of Disciplinary, Rules and Referees. The player will not be accepted back into the League unless a written apology is received from the player to the League and the opposition player/ players the action was directed against.' The day may come that this rule will need to be invoked, please be assured the league will act swiftly and strongly should this situation arise. It is hoped that the SUL will prove to be a catalyst to other football leagues and governing bodies of all sports encompassing a written commitment for its clubs and in turn players to sign a declaration against sectarianism, racism and bigotry. A particularly pleasing aspect of the league has been the debate in amongst the players of what constitutes a bigoted remark. This debate would not happen without the SUL raising consciousness of the issue and in turn making the players realise that there are consequences for bigoted actions. (except from Oran Mor)
